Hike with us to the Sipi Falls

Hiking in Sipi offers several hiking trails. From short hikes to one of the waterfalls to longer hikes of several hours are possible in this beautiful area. There are in total three major waterfalls, with several small falls in between as well as natural pools, where you even have a chance to refresh yourself and take a swim.

Especially in the rainy season, the Sipi river carries a lot of water and is therefore much more impressive.

We will start the Sipi Falls hike in the village and according to your preference hike up to the first waterfall. At this point, it is also possible to take the upper route and get to the top of the waterfall. From there you can enjoy an amazing view, and while you can take your break enjoy the peaceful nature and the surroundings. The view is just gorgeous and on clear days you can see the plains of Karamoja as well as the lakes in the far distance.

Make sure you carry your camera to capture these amazing moments.

At the second waterfall, you can explore a little cave just behind the waterfall. Having the water falling right in front of you like a curtain. At this spot, you will also have a chance to take some beautiful photos.

Heading down to the third waterfall you will pass the slow parts of the river, with several beautiful viewpoints, where you can overlook parts of the village with its plantations.

Not far from the Sipi Waterfalls is another waterfall, named Chebonet Clear Water Falls. This waterfall is also a very beautiful place and worth exploring. Especially during the rainy season, it is a very beautiful place, you might want to see it for yourself.

Abseiling / Rappelling

Reaching the third waterfall, which is the most majestic one, you can enjoy the view of the Sipi valley and make the experience of your lifetime.

At this place, you can do the abseiling of 100 meters drop right next to the waterfall. Our well-trained crew will guide and assist you to enjoy this experience as much as possible and take care of your safety.

Once you reach the bottom of the waterfall, you can continue with your hike back to your accommodation.

If you want to have an idea of what abseiling is about, watch this video below. It was taken at our spot at the Sipi Waterfall.

We can guarantee you, you will have an amazing experience and if you want to experience a portion of adrenaline, this is the activity you really should try.

If this has got your interest, get in touch with us, we are happy to give you this incredible experience.

Coffee tour experience

If you love coffee, you are welcome to come with us to visit our local coffee farmers and learn everything about coffee. One of the best Arabica coffee is growing on Mount Elgon and our region is known for its quality. Our farmers in Sipi will be happy to share with you everything about coffee, how it is grown, and the different processing methods.

You will have the chance to prepare your own cup of coffee in traditional ways and enjoy differently brewed coffee.

Do you know all the stages of the production of coffee and how it is processed?

If not, here you have the chance to learn and see for yourself. The coffee we grow in Sipi is fully organic and once you tasted the pure and perfectly processed Arabica coffee, you will know the difference. The downside of this experience could be, you will not like the cheap taste of the coffee from the supermarkets anymore.

This activity complements very well the Sipi hiking experience and even after your adrenaline shot from them abseiling, a cup of fresh organic coffee is the cherry on the top of the cake.

Enjoy the sunset at our sunset viewpoint

After your Sipi hiking experience and maybe abseiling and coffee tour, you will feel a little bit exhausted and at the same time enriched and recharged in your mind after such amazing experiences in nature.

To finish your day perfectly what can be better than an amazing sunset at a viewpoint in a high spot, where you have a 360-degree view?

It is a short walk to the sunset viewpoint, where you can enjoy the view of the lowlands and villages located in the valley and slopes of Mount Elgon. At this point, you can even spot the three Sipi waterfalls. While you enjoy the sun setting in the far west you will also see the lakes in the far distance reflecting like little mirrors, reflecting the colors of the sun.

This viewpoint has also played a very significant role in the past during the times when the Sebei tribe had its King. This place is even called Kings Rock.

If you want to know more about it, ask us and we will share with you the story about this amazing place.

ABOUT SIPI FALLS AND MOUNT ELGON
IN EASTERN UGANDA

The Sipifalls are located in the Kapchorwa district, Sebei region. (Where the Sabiny people, a tribe, are living at the Sipifalls). Sipi is located on the slopes of Mount Elgon, at an elevation between 1600-2000 meters above sea level, in Eastern Uganda, bordering Kenya. Parts of Mount Elgon are on Kenyan territory.

How to get to Sipi

There are several options. You can either hire a car and drive for yourself or use public transportation. The journey to Sipi takes about 3 hours from Jinja. If you are coming from Kampala, you will pass Jinja, the city at the source of the River Nile.

The meaning of Sipi

in our local language is “Sep” which means “River” in the Kubsabiny language.

The Sipifalls

originate from the hot springs of Mt Elgon, flowing down the mountain as river Sipi, and creating a series of three major waterfalls.

Even though all three waterfalls have something magical, the third is very special. With a Drop of 100 meters, this waterfall looks impressive, especially in the rainy season. But nevertheless, this waterfall offers some fun activities, known as abseiling or rappelling (depending on, which country you are coming from).

This waterfall is one of the highest in the region, and only the Sisiyi fall is slightly higher, but there are no further activities around the Sisiyi falls except the hiking trail around.

The people

in Sipi are hospitable and friendly. There are mainly two tribes living in the Mount Elgon region and shared by two countries which are Uganda and Kenya.

The tribes settling within the slopes of Mt Elgon are the Bagisu and Sebei but in Kenya, Sebei is pronounced as Saboat but means the same Sebei people.

Mt Elgon

is a volcanic mountain in East Africa and the word Elgon means “close one eye so that you can see far distance” in the Sebei language. Geographically it was the highest volcanic mountain in East Africa but due to its volcanic eruption which took place 24 million years ago, and erosions over many years, it has reduced to the fourth highest volcanic mountain in East Africa with the highest peak called Wagagai.

The Wagagai peak is 4321 meters above sea level and it’s now a dormant volcanic mountain.
Mount Elgon has four zones. The montane Zone, a bamboo zone, Heathland, and beautiful moorland zones. It also has eight greater lakes.
